How To Get A Football Agent: Why You Probably Don’t Need One Yet… And What To Do Instead

You think an agent is the golden ticket.
It isn’t. Not yet.

If you were truly ready, agents would already be calling.
That is not a knock. It is a wake-up call.

I’m Eric Friedlander, former pro and founder of RicFit. I have been in your shoes. I chased agents. I waited for help. Nothing moved until I built leverage and acted like my own agent. That is when the doors opened and I signed my first pro deal at 22. This is the roadmap I wish I had.

The business reality no one tells you:

Football is a business.
Clubs want results.
Agents want commissions.
Coaches want players they trust.

Hard truths:

  • Most agents will not reply to cold DMs with no proof.

  • Most agents do not build projects from zero. They multiply what already works.

  • Most clubs listen to people they trust or to players with a strong CV and clear video.

  • Most players wait. They hand their future to strangers. Years go by.

You do not need to wait. You can build leverage now.

The underdog edge:

If you were not in an academy and you are not getting flooded with offers, good. You are forced to get sharp. You will learn to market yourself, train with intent, and solve problems. That grit is your edge. Underdogs win when they stop asking for permission and start creating options.

What great agents actually do

Good agents:

  • Negotiate clean contracts and protect you.

  • Open warm doors using their network.

  • Handle paperwork, bonuses, clauses, and timelines.

  • See your true market value and position you correctly.

  • Operate with ethics and treat clients like family.

But remember this: agents amplify. They do not invent your value. If you are at zero, there is nothing to amplify.

Become your own agent first: the 4-step system:

1) Build a one-page pro CV that gets read

Make it easy to scan in 30 seconds.

Include:

  • Full name, age, nationality, passport, dominant foot, height, weight, primary and secondary positions.

  • Current and past teams with years.

  • Basic stats that matter for your role. Appearances. Goals. Assists. Clean sheets. Minutes.

  • Achievements. Cups. Trials. Showcases. Captaincy.

  • Contact info and a professional headshot.

  • Direct link to your highlight reel in the header.

Keep formatting clean. PDF. Clear headings. No clutter.

2) Create a highlight reel that sells you in 30 seconds

Rules:

  • Length 2 to 5 minutes. Best 60 seconds first.

  • Label name, number, position on the opening frame.

  • Circle yourself before each clip. Add short context if needed.

  • Show actions that matter for your position. First touch. Scanning. Pressing. Timing. Final ball. 1v1 duels. Recovery runs.

  • Add two full matches in the same Google Drive folder. Coaches ask for them.

  • No hype edits. Let the football speak.

Study reels from players one tier above you and reverse engineer the structure.

3) Find trials and trainings yourself

You are not begging. You are offering value.

Where to reach out:

  • LinkedIn. Search sporting directors, head coaches, assistants, GMs.

  • Email. Club sites and Transfermarkt staff pages.

  • Instagram. Many lower-tier clubs live in the DMs.

Message rules:

  • Short. Respectful. Specific.

  • Offer to train first. Training is easier to say yes to than a trial.

  • Send one clean folder link with CV, reel, full matches.

Example:
Subject: Right Back available to train in July

Coach [Name], I am [Name], a [Nationality] right back currently in [City]. I will be in [Country] from [dates] and would love to train to stay sharp. Here is my CV and video folder. If there is a need at right back or right wing back, I can bring pace, 1v1 defending, and engine. Thank you for your time. [Name] WhatsApp [+xx]

Follow up after five to seven days. Then move on.

4) Learn the market and go where you have leverage

Questions to answer:

  • Which countries welcome foreign players in lower tiers

  • What level are you at right now based on film and data

  • Which leagues are a smart first step for your CV and visa situation

  • What season calendar fits your timing

Starting in a smaller European league is not beneath you. It is your launchpad. Minutes plus film plus references beat fantasy.

When you are actually ready for an agent

Clear signals:

  • Clubs are contacting you directly.

  • You have more than one offer on the table.

  • You are a top performer at semi-pro or already pro.

  • Negotiations and logistics are pulling time from your football.

Now an agent saves you time, improves terms, and opens better doors. You are choosing from strength, not scarcity.

Outreach tracker so you stop losing deals in the cracks;

Simple sheet fields:

  • Club. Country. Contact. Role. Email or profile link. Date sent. Response. Follow-up date. Notes.

Color code by status. Most wins happen on follow-up two or three.

Daily actions that make you undeniable

  • Train like a pro. Strength. Speed. Technical. Tactical. Recovery.

  • Post smart on LinkedIn. Two to three times a week. Clips. Match notes. Process.

  • Build relationships. Congratulate coaches. Comment with value. Stay visible.

  • Update your folder monthly with new clips and full matches.

  • Travel light and be ready to fly inside 48 hours when a door opens.

The bottom line:

Waiting for an agent is procrastination dressed up as hope.
Control what you can control. Build proof. Build options. When you become valuable, agents appear. Until then, be your own agent.

FAQ Section:

Do I need an agent to get my first trial?
No. With a clean CV, a strong highlight reel, and targeted outreach, players land trials directly. Being in the country multiplies replies.

When should I look for an agent?
When you have offers, consistent minutes, and real interest. An agent then negotiates better terms and opens higher doors.

Where should I message clubs?
LinkedIn, email, and sometimes Instagram for lower divisions. Keep messages short. Offer to train first. Send one folder link.

What goes in my player folder?
One page CV. Two to five minute highlight reel with best minute first. Two full matches. Short bio. Coach reference.

How do I avoid bad agents?
Ask for recent placements. Speak to current clients. Get clear terms in writing. Avoid long exclusives without activity.
